The Big Muff Pi was one of the fuzz effect pedals that set a turning point. Unlike most of the fuzz effect pedals back when it was introduced, which were germanium-based, the Big Muff Pi was an all-silicon fuzz effect pedal with four stages. Thanks to that it didn’t had the limitations germanium fuzz effect pedals have (it could go anythere in the chain, temperature and “mojo” of the transistors was non-existent…). First used by guitar players like Hendrix or Santana, the Big Muff Pi has become a standard among distortion and fuzz effect pedals thanks to it’s creamy and rich sound. As it has a wide frequency response, it can as well be used with bass.
